Vancouver Whitecaps overturned an early setback to thrash Cavalry FC 4-1 at ATCO Field, booking their place in the Canadian Championship semi-finals.
Cavalry made the perfect start when an unfortunate own goal from A. Pearlman handed Vancouver the lead inside two minutes, but the hosts couldn't hold on before the break. Cavalry drew level right on the stroke of half-time through D. Klomp, capping a first half that also saw Vancouver's T. Blackmon booked in stoppage time.
The turning point came at the interval, with T. Muller introduced for Vancouver alongside the assisting Muller himself linking play. The substitute made an immediate impact, restoring the lead in the 61st minute with a well-taken finish. Just three minutes later, B. White doubled Vancouver's advantage, and the floodgates opened.
Cavalry tried to respond with a triple change, bringing on C. Elva, N. Edwards and M. Baldisimo, but Vancouver continued to press forward. R. Elloumi, set up by White, added a fourth in the 75th minute after coming on as part of a double substitution alongside B. Caicedo.
Cards were shown to J. Ngando for Vancouver and, deep into stoppage time, G. Ntignee for Cavalry, but by then the contest was well settled. Vancouver's second-half ruthlessness proved decisive as they advance 4-1.
