Chelsea's defensive ranks are set for a major clear-out, according to BBC News, with head coach Xabi Alonso confirming the club intend to trim their centre-back options down from ten to just "four or five."
The Blues have just added to that glut, completing a £52m swoop for Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix on Thursday. But that deal has only heightened the logjam at the back, with Alonso also currently able to call upon Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo and Josh Acheampong among others.
With so many bodies competing for so few starting berths, exits look inevitable before the transfer window shuts. Alonso's comments suggest Chelsea are prioritising a leaner, more manageable squad rather than hoarding depth for its own sake — meaning at least a handful of recognised defenders could be on their way out of Stamford Bridge in the coming weeks as the Spaniard looks to sharpen his options rather than simply stockpile them.
